Month in Review: May 2021

Reviewing my miles, walks and runs from May 2021.

May was a good month, wasn’t it? If you discount how cold and wet it was. Like many others, I resorted to turning the heating back on, shortly before the end… And now, here in June, we’re all striving to keep cool!

03/05 – 13 miles – Castles and Coast Way (West Somerset)
06/05 – 5.5 miles – Prior’s Wood, North Somerset
07/05 – 3 mile run – Wick St. Lawrence, North Somerset
10/05 – 16.5 miles – West Mendip Way: Shipham to Draycott
16/05 – 8.25 miles – Priddy, Somerset
19/05 – 3.5 miles – Black Down, Mendip Hills
23/05 – 8.75 miles – Goblin Combe, North Somerset
25/05 – 2.25 mile run – Wick St. Lawrence
27/05 – 2.25 mile run – Wick St. Lawrence
30/05 – 11.75 miles – Quantock Hills (WsW)
31/05 – 10.5 miles – Arlingham Horseshoe, Gloucestershire

Total for May 2021 = 83.25 miles

In spite of the weather and whatever it deicided to throw at us, I did manage to get out for some very good walks and on a very regular basis. This was partly because I was training for the 30 mile Mendip Challenge but also because… It’s what I do, these days.

For the first time in a few years, I made it out one evening after work, for my favourite local bluebell walk at Prior’s Wood near Portbury.

Tackling the 13 mile-long Castles and Coast Way was a definite highlight on the first walk of the month. Set in between the Quantock Hills and coastline of West Somerset. I’m glad I’ve been able to explore this one and hope to revisit it on another day or year.

After receiving my first dose of the Phfizer vaccine one Sunday morning, I continued on for a very wet walk around Priddy. I packed my waterproofs and set off prepared for the worst. Sun would shine before the end. I was suffering a bit with feelings of fatigue and slight nausea initially… But that all passed within forty-eight hours.

I managed to restart my evening walks and have continued that in through June. On top of that, I’ve started running again. Not perhaps as often as I was doing before I got my bike… But I am doing more than I had been.

Group walks have also resumed. I’m trying to move forward with the walks that I want to do and seeing who might follow along.

Having just completed the Mendip Challenge in June, I’m now looking forward to things I may want to do and places I may want to go through the summer. There will be much more to follow.

Total for 2021 so far = 384.25 miles

Thanks for reading.
